But the best time to go cod fishing is late winter to early spring. The average Montauk cod fish weighs anywhere between 10 to 40 pounds, with an occasional heavyweight tipping the scales at over 40 pounds. The best methods for catching cod are bottom fishing with fresh skimmer clams or jigging. These fish swim to depths of 90 to 180 feet in the waters south of Montauk Point to east of Block Island.
